This was Charlie's first real experience with a lake, and it was one of those moments that made it crystal clear there are some real differences in the core personalities of our boys. Charlie has already displayed a love of sand or dirt - he'll plop right down and start poking at it, digging in it, just checking out the texture (ant hills are a particular favorite). So when we first arrived I set him down on the beach, expecting him to entertain himself with the sand. Wrong.
While he certainly did enjoy the sand later, Charlie's first instinct was to get up and walk right into the water. I think I detected a very slight hesitation before his first shoe got wet, but that was about it. He waded straight in until the water was almost to his knees, and then bent over to explore with his hands, soaking his entire front. Did I mention I hadn't changed him into his swimming suit yet? From our experience in pools I already knew he loved water, but I thought he'd be at least a little intimidated by the lake!
Zach would never have done that. While he loves to swim, he'd still rather not have his feet touch the bottom (and this lake has a very nice sandy, weed-free bottom). The first few times he saw the lake he would stand there and observe for a while, before getting closer and eventually going in with one of us. This year he was quite a bit more adventurous - jumping off the dock, swimming on his own, bouncing like crazy on the oasis island.
Both boys had a great day, and so did we. Thanks again Brodd family!!
