Pee Wee Sports

Zach had his first experience with organized sports earlier this summer - three weeks, six sessions total, of Pee Wee Sports. We signed him up for the combination class, which was both soccer and t-ball. I was a little concerned he'd be disappointed, since once I told him about it, he started asking if he needed a uniform, shin-guards, cleats, etc. He also wanted to know what the team was called, and if he'd get a shirt. Turns out he did get a t-shirt, and they did name the team... he and his teammates voted and settled on Green Sharks. :)

Anyway, he had a great time. The "coaches" did a good job of combining instruction and practice of the sports with just plain fun games that had nothing to do with soccer or t-ball. He also learned a lot about soccer... I've now noticed him forming his cars into teams with forwards and defenders, which is what they taught the kids about the positions in soccer.

On the last day, the kids got to decide whether they wanted to play soccer or t-ball, and whether they wanted to play with the parents or against us. The vote was soccer versus the parents. Scott and I had taken turns going with Zach, and that night was mine. It was... interesting. Let's just say the kids beat us 5-1, and even Zach noticed that some of the parents weren't trying at all.

As was to be expected, the kids all wanted to score a goal, so there was always a massive pack surrounding the ball, knocking each other over, stealing the ball from their teammates. So, when Zach was playing goalie, I purposely headed down the mini-field and took a shot (a slow one on the ground, yelling to Zach that it was coming) to see if he could stop it. And I think some of the other parents were giving me the stink-eye! What can I say, the poor kid was bored in the goal, and the other kids who were supposed to be playing defense were busy picking dandelions and playing dancing games!?!?! Sheesh. I guess I have a lot to learn about pee wee sports.

^ We called this coach "Big Ben"; there's always a nose-picker in every crowd!!

^ Whoo hoo - running laps! Introducing himself, identifying his favorite ice cream as chocolate (he didn't want to give the real answer, which was too long. Something like chocolate fudge cookie dough)

^ Charlie wanted to play too!
