Goodbyes

Scott's parents left this morning, after being here for almost two weeks. It's going to be very odd for it to just be us again, especially just Zach and me during the weekdays. Zach has definitely adjusted to having extra people around to give him lots of love and attention, as well as being on the go - the other morning he went to the door with his shoes in his hand and said "go?" We've had lots of fun adventures with G&G Willard the last couple weeks!

Besides being sad to say goodbye to them, at the same time we waved adios to the convertible, as Scott's dad drove off in it. Scott had been mulling over selling the car for a while now, so when his dad expressed interest, it was kind of a no-brainer. I was surprised that I was a little sad to see it go, especially since I've hardly been in it the last year or so. Just lots of good-byes, I guess.

But on the bright side, we'll see the Willards again in a few weeks. And, my parents are back in Hudson for a few days, so Zach will get to see his other grandparents again. While Alan and Teri were here, he learned to say grandma and grandpa, instead of the "ga" he managed with my parents. We also discovered he can say and do some other things we didn't know; he made a hilarious face when we asked him to smile for the camera, and could identify and say "triangle" when playing with some of his shapes. Who knew? It's amazing how much he's learned in the past month or so.

Back to the subject of goodbyes, I should update you on Scott and Alan's trip to New York. While there, they got to say goodbye to Yankee Stadium, when they saw the Twins play their last two games in that hallowed ballpark. The Twins didn't manage to stop the Yankees at home, but the guys had a great time anyway. We thought we'd get to see them on tv, as they had seats in the front row in right field (supposedly "home run alley") at Yankee Stadium, but they didn't get their 15 minutes that day. They also bid adieu to Shea Stadium, seeing three Mets games. Yes, they went out to New York and saw 5 baseball games in 5 days! Besides all those ball games, they did quite a bit of walking, just seeing sights they hadn't seen in a while. Scott even took a few pictures with our old camera, which I'll get posted out here one of these days...

Lions and tigers and butterflies, oh my

Since my last post was picture-free, this one will mostly be pictures! Teri, Zach, and I went to the Como Park Zoo today, where we encountered lions, tigers, and yes - butterflies! They have a great new exhibit where you walk through a tent-like structure filled with flowers and butterflies. I got a little carried away with the pictures, but those things were hard to resist!

Fabulous

I forgot to mention, when I took Zach in on Monday for his 18-month doctor's appointment, they pronounced him "fabulous". So in case you were thinking that we're a little biased as his parents, nope - the medical community concurs: he's fabulous! And for those of you who like the stats... he's 24 lbs 7 oz (30th percentile) and 32.5 inches tall (75th).

As far as what's new with Zach, it's definitely his vocabulary - it's in overdrive. For example, in just the last day or so, he graduated from "coo" for cookie monster (yes, he loves all things sesame street), to the full "cookie". He also continues to crack me up with the things he chooses to echo, since I tend to forget that he's paying much closer attention than I realize. An example... I was telling Teri (Scott's mom) how the woman at jcpenneys had irritated me a bit with her pushy sales tactics, and I said something along the lines of "I wanted to say - back off lady!" So instantly, of course, out of Zach's mouth comes "back off", in exactly the same tone I'd used. Then he just cracks up, like he knows he's said something that sounds hilarious coming out of the mouth of a toddler. And it was.

We've had quite a week! Teri and I have spent some time shopping (imagine that), but also just some good fun playing with Zach, taking walks, going to Highland Fest etc. We made quite a dent at the Albertville outlet mall; Zach was a trouper! I have to say, between the time with my parents, and now with Scott's parents here, I'm going to have a hard time adjusting to it being just Zach and me again during the weekdays. Besides just enjoying the company, I am taking full advantage of the help, so I can do the little things that somehow add up ... going for a run any time of day, grocery shopping all by myself, and - I saw TWO movies this week! Wahoo! (movie reviews below if you're interested) For those of you who have family, especially grandparents, close, I hope you know how lucky you are. We're just happy we have parents who are willing to take as much time as they do, and to come to us, so they can get to know their fabulous grandson!

More to come on Scott and Alan's adventures, and some pictures - I have not been hauling my camera around lately - I'll be better!

Movie reviews....
The Dark Knight (Batman): great movie, lots (perhaps too many) plot twists, amazing cast. Very dark, very tense movie - not the movie for you if you don't like sitting on the edge of your seat for 2.5 hours (or sitting through any movie for 2.5 hours).

Mamma Mia: not a great movie, but still great fun. How can watching a slightly overacting cast bop around to ABBA music not be a fun time? If you're looking for great choreography and Broadway-caliber singing, go see the musical. If you like Meryl Streep, think Pierce Brosnan is great eye candy (despite his horrible singing voice), and want to see some great views of Greece - go see the movie.

Okay!

18 months old?!?!? A year and a half??? What?? How can we be the parents of a boy who is well on his way to two? When did this happen?

While for the most part, the first year and a half of Zach's life have flown by, at the same time, it sure seems like FOREVER ago that we were experiencing what our friends Adam and Jamie are experiencing now - sleepless nights, the witching hour from 5-8 pm, swaddling, worrying constantly about feeding, and snuggling away with a newborn on your chest. I do miss the snuggling, but not the rest! I'm a broken record; every month I say - no, THIS is the best age! And it just keeps getting better.
We always looked forward to when Zach would start talking, focusing on how it would be so much easier when he could tell us what he wanted. But we never realized how darn funny it would be! I really do need to get some more video out here, because there is nothing more hilarious than the way Zach says "ok" right now. He still hardly ever says "yes", now his answer to most things is "ohhh-KAAY" (much better than the constant "no" we heard before). He has the funniest inflections; most of his sentences end up sounding like questions. We're going to have to watch what we're saying even more now, since he's also echoing us at some of the most unexpected times. You should hear this little guy yell at Koskie like we do - he does a wicked impersonation!

It's also been amazing to discover how much he really understands. After we'd been gone for about 10 days in Hudson, when I pulled up in front of the house, Zach instantly said "Koskie?". I was amazed - after all that time away, he not only recognized our house, but remembered our dog, who he hadn't seen in a long time. Today at the mall with G&G Willard, he looked at one of the rides, which was an orange bus, and said "beep beep" (sing it with me - the horn on the bus goes beep beep beep!). A few minutes later, he was mooing loudly and pointing; when I followed his finger I saw a fairly abstract drawing of a cow on a sign way up near the roof. Brilliant, I tell you.

I've been working on Zach's scrapbook again lately (I'm all the way to his 3rd week of life - yahoo!), and it's been very moving to go through all the pictures. He's grown into such a funny, good-natured little boy. It really makes me wonder and look forward to what the next eighteen months bring!

With his frog - at 1 week, and at 18 months.

The rest of our time with "ga"

Let me see if I can quickly summarize the rest of the fun we had while staying with my parents. But first, I want to thank them again for their never-ending generosity. We pretty much took over, both the house (toys everywhere!) and the schedule (Zach wants to eat/sleep, Zach eats/sleeps). And my wonderful parents just took it all in stride, and made the most of their time with Zach. It was great to see - makes me wish, as I always do, that they were geographically closer! But instead I'll just continue to be thankful that Zach had the time to really get to know "ga" - as he dubbed them both.

On to our adventures! Besides the towns I already mentioned, we also managed to get to Hastings, and then went to Willow River State Park in WI (not far from Hudson - had no idea it was there!). I was pleasantly surprised - it has a nice lake, which is dammed to create a pretty cool waterfall. There apparently is also a natural waterfall, but we weren't up to a 4-mile round trip hike with Zach. He did, however, demonstrate his growing hiking skills on the rocky path down to the river - he barely needed to hold our hands. He also demonstrated (loudly) that he prefers to get his own way, when we had to convince him he couldn't go back down once we had navigated our way up. The joys of toddlerhood, let me tell you!

My aunt Carole and uncle Al drove over from central WI one day, to hang out with us and also my cousin Dave, his wife Mindy, and kids Hannah, Luke, and Megan. It was a great day - perfect weather, fun to catch up with everyone, but I have to admit my favorite part was watching Zach fall in love. Megan (age 8) was his absolute favorite person by the end of the day; he'd cry "me me" (I think his version of Megan) if she wasn't by his side. At one point he didn't even want me - just Megan! She was wonderful with him, it was very fun to watch. Check out the picture!

In other news, we got to see Sylvia Grace last night, now that she's happily at home. She is, of course, as precious as can be. I tell you, there's nothing like holding a sleeping newborn! Congrats again Adam and Jamie!

Next up for the Willards: part 2 of grandparent month. Scott's parents are arriving either tonight or tomorrow morning, depending on whether or not they have the energy to drive it all in one day (they're coming from Bozeman, MT). They've got lots of fun planned, so I will do my best to keep you posted on our latest adventures.

Remembering 4th of Julys past...

We're back! On-line, that is. Turns out some of the storms last week took out some electrical lines, and the electric company made restoring people's power a priority over restoring our internet. Hard to argue that, I guess. But it's good to feel connected again!

So anyway, where were we? Let's start with our 4th of July celbration (yes, I know it's misspelled... just a little poke at our friend Adam's spelling skills. It's a joke that never gets old to the rest of us). If you're not familiar with our tradition, we, along with 4 other couples, have been trekking down to my parents cottage in Pewaukee (WI) to celebrate the 4th of July, every year since 2002. But since last year was the final year in Pewaukee (Beck & Bill sold the cottage), we weren't sure what we'd do this year. Until again, my parents came to the rescue - inviting the same group, and more friends, out to the house they rented!

The location is probably the most minor change in our celbration, if I look back over the last six years. When we started our tradition in 2002, out of the 5 couples, one was married, and between all of us we had one dog. I'll spare you the year-by-year changes, but if you look at us now - all 5 couples are married (see Jen & Aaron - June 24th post), and there are 5 kids (the latest is Sylvia Grace - see July 13th post) and we can't forget the three dogs and four cats that are a part of our families.

Back in 2002, our activities centered on getting some sun (and keeping Jenny from getting too burnt), playing endless bocce and goofy drinking games, bonfires, and sleeping late. If you were one of the squirrels in the trees, you would have heard conversations about going to Summerfest (we talked about it every year, but never went), how to slow the guys down so they'd be functional the next day, and how comfortable the hammock was for napping.

Pictures are definitely worth a thousand words... these are from the 4th of July celbration this year! You're seeing the Brodds and Roses centered around Kasey, with Jamie more than ready for little Sylvia to make her appearance. The other is Jodi blowing bubbles for Zach and Stuart - instant entertainment. These are a good summary of how we spend our time now - it's mostly about the kids! As you look at the other pictures, you'll see some of our other fun - we still managed to play a little bocce, spend some time on our floating oasis island, drink a few margaritas, and eventually have a bonfire on the beach. But a lot of the conversation centered on baby names, the merits of cloth diapers, and how to get your kid to sleep. And you know what? I wouldn't change a thing.

Life without technology...

After spending a great week and a half on the St. Croix with my parents, we were looking forward to heading home for a few reasons - one, to sleep in our own beds, and two, to be able to use the internet!! While we could occasionally get on-line by sitting in a certain spot (out on the deck worked best) and using someone else's router, it was very slow and a bit frustrating. So when we got home, we instantly booted up the laptop so we could check email, update the blog, check out our (ok Scott's) fantasy baseball standings, etc. And then we discovered... our internet wasn't working!!! Something about nodes and links, blah blah blah, but the bottom line is our provider isn't even sure when it will be back up. Ugh.

I never realized how dependent we were on being "on-line" until we weren't. How am I supposed to find out what time the zoo opens on Sundays?? Scott actually bought a newspaper so he could check the box scores! We have now gone about 5 days with NO access whatsoever, and I'm definitely in withdrawal. I'm at a coffee house now, and I don't even drink coffee! So I'm hurrying to get through my email and update the blog too, before Scott, Zach, and Koskie come back from the dog park to pick me up.

I have lots to update - our week+ with my parents on the river, the 4th of July celbration, and all the hilarious pronunciations of words Zach is saying these days (I think "scoo-bah" is my favorite - his version of "school bus"). But I think all that is going to have to wait until I have a little more time.

There are two new blogs for you to check out on our blog list. One contains major news - Sylvia Grace was born to our good friends Adam and Jamie! We're patiently waiting for them to come home from the hospital so we can go check out Zach's newest friend. :)

The other blog is for the McDaniel family - Scott's sister Mandy. They have two girls who are constantly on the go, so I suspect that will be a fun blog to keep tabs on!

Scott hasn't called to say he's on the way yet, so I'll include a few pictures too... the top one is of the house in Hudson, the other of some of the "family" on the 4th - us with the Roses and Nunbergs.
More to come... hopefully soon!

On the St. Croix

Happy 4th of July from North Hudson, WI. We are on our 5th day of relaxing on the river at the house that G&G Klicka have rented. The views are amazing - check out that sunset! We've spent our days walking around the historic downtowns of several small towns on the river; so far Hudson, Stillwater, and Taylors Falls. Zach went on his first hike in Taylors Falls, as we checked out the gorgeous views of the river from the bluffs, and investigated the glacial potholes (who knew?). A few pictures are included to show you what you're missing; "it's way better than the Dells" is a direct quote from Wisconsin's own Bill Klicka.

Today we are anticipating a great "celbration" as our friends make the trek across the river for what will be our 6th annual 4th of July get-together. The weather is already perfect, as it has been all week. More pictures and updates soon, although this is a little difficult to update since we're borrowing a neighbor's wi-fi!

PS... this last pic is just one I thought was cute - Zach in his shades!
